A map of the upcoming rapid transit system.

Downtown

In a nutshell:

The first phase of rapid transit development will entail some improvements to the transit stations along Graham Ave and the University of Winnipeg's transit loop. Improvements to transit should be part of a broader effort to make downtown more pedestrian friendly, environmentally sustainable, and economically prosperous.

Possible issues:

  • Bike integration

By making an investment in bike infrastructure simultaneous to transit improvements, Winnipeg could take a big step towards making downtown's transportation more sustainable. Adequate facilities for bike lock-up should also be looked at for each station.

  • Land use issues and transit oriented development

It is absolutely imperative to downtown's future vitality that some means of redeveloping some surface parking lots be found. Some transit oriented development along Graham Ave coinciding with the first phase of rapid transit could be a promising start.

  • Accessibility issues

It is essential that each station be built to the highest standards of accessibility for those who have disabilities. View the article 'Bus Rapid Transit Accessibility Guidelines', developed by Tom Rickert for the World Bank
